A 20 minute drive from Mudgee is Gulgong – a 19th Century Gold rush town. This heritage town featured on the original ten dollar note and with much of its character remaining still holds lots of appeal. Wander down the original, narrow streets to find heritage buildings which haven’t changed much since the late 1800’s.
The town hosts the Henry Lawson Festival on the June Long weekend.
Known as “the town that built Sydney”, Kandos was the largest cement works in the Southern Hemisphere. Nowadays, Kandos is home to a diverse and eclectic cluster of businesses & artisans.
It is also a stepping stone to one of our personal favourites, the beautiful Dunns Swamp – originally built to supply water to the cement works. Now it is a great spot to explore the Wollemi National Park and enjoy canoeing and the walking tracks while observing the outstanding biodiversity of plants & animals.
Interesting events to attend in Kandos include The Tyre Smoking Street Machine in January to the biannual Garden Fair in November, A Bob Marley Festival and the popular contemporary art festival “Cementa”.
This quaint heritage town along the famous Bylong Valley Way is fast becoming known for its wineries, Yum Cha & Tea House, Olive estates and other delicious food delights. Shutterbugs will delight with the wide streetscapes home to many public houses, charming churches & private residences made from the local sandstone.
The bushwalkers can explore the stunning Dunns Swamp (so not a swamp) and Ferntree Gully.
The highlight of the year must be the annual “Street Feast” in November. The main street is closed to traffic and becomes a street market spilling over with local food, wine & produce and arts & crafts, culminating with a long table lunch – a very long table – with live music.
For those of you who like a drive, head to our nearby villages for something different.
